Just got home from 13 days of holiday smiley_smile.gif

We drove from Denmark through Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina and back again.

137427586287097600_resized.jpg?width=680

150 km´s into Germany the Volvo started running on only 5 cylinders!
"luckily" we had this problem before - it was a broken fuel line for one of the injectors.
Its a common problem on the OM603 engine as they rattles and therefore breaks.
So we had spares and its an easy fix - 10 mins and we were back on track.
But that was hot 10 mins as the sun was baking and the engine was hot!

137427619906319000_resized.jpg?width=136

Next day we stopped for a short rest at the entrance to a forest - right beside a "no entry" sign. A few minutes later the cops arrived. but they just wanted to have a look at the strange vehiclesmiley_smile.gif Very friendly Polizei-Beamte.

As always we were looking out for some "Urban Exploring" and we managed to find an old abandoned Soviet military base. Not much left unfortunately, but there was a few old maps and remains of AK74 posters...

There is lots of great Urbex in the former Eastern Germany, but they do a hell of a job shutting all access to the doors and windows of the lower floors. But this base was on a restricted army area and therefore the hadn't taken such measuressmiley_smile.gif

137427659787032200_resized.jpg?width=136

For the first time ever on any our "adventures" we camped at an actual camp-site! We had gotten to Czech Republic and needed a bath.

Not the pretties of sites in the outskirts of Prague, but we made a campfire and tasted some of the local "Tuzemsky" - its rum but as its not made of sugar canes it can't be called rum - but it tasted just fine - and so did the local beer. smiley_sexy.gif

137427676088243900_resized.jpg?width=136

After that we visited Prague Zoo - its gigantic! after 3 hours of walking almost nonstop we hadn't seen it all yet! We met this little fellow who didn't seem very impressed by meeting two Danes with bad breath!

Czech has lots of small roads and off-road routes, some of the roads the gps found was to narrow for even a Samurai - video footage coming soon!

137427717750514500_resized.jpg?width=136

From there we went to Austria. Almost all of the forest roads are blocked, so we didn't drive much offroad there. But Austria looks like a painting: Colorful houses with lots of flowers and a scenic background formed by the Alps.

Wienerschnitzel and weissbier just are better in a Austrian "Gasthof" smiley_tongue.gif
137427708430632600_resized.jpg?width=136

Then we got into Slovenia, which we found out is now a part of the European Union and they now uses the ugly Euros as payment - but very convenient.

We found a little grass field in a forest on a mountain, soon after we arrived a farmer came on an old tractor, so we asked him if it was okay that we camped there. (almost all Slovenians speaks fluently English) He didn't mind, but offered us to follow him to his house and camp there, were we also could get water - but we gratefully declined as the forest were fine. Nice guysmiley_smile.gif

As we were finished cooking it started to thunder and rain - perfect timing.

137427711471222000_resized.jpg?width=136

Next morning i followed the gps for a different route out of the forest - it was pretty good off-road, but the road ended on a steep grass slope. It looked easy but it was to slippery to turn the car around(clay like mud) we tried to engage the diff locs, but ofcourse that just resulted in the car going sideways down the slope (it was a lot steeper than it seems on the picture!)smiley_shocked.gif But hey! Then we had an excuse to try out the new winch! It worked just fine (yes yes, movie coming soon) and pulled the nose in the right direction. Nice!smiley_sexy.gif

137427713333972600_resized.jpg?width=680

Later we found some ruins and an entrance to a cave. We didn't prepare much as it looked small, so we grabbed a single flashlight and the DSLR and went in. We soon found out that it was pretty deep and there was a lot of crawling through narrow holes and there was some pretty deep holes in there!

137427724842622500_resized.jpg?width=680

Very exiting though - but maybe it had been better if Lisa didn't wear hear "princess" slippers and we had taken a couple of our headlights and the GoPro instead!

137427757269814800_resized.jpg?width=136

137427697653886300_resized.jpg?width=136

We did go out and eat, but we also did a lot of the cooking on our own - buying what seemed local things that we cannot pronounce and made a meal like we thought it should be done smiley_happy.gif

137427780312094600_resized.jpg?width=136

Later we arrived at the Postojna Caves - somewhat bigger than the one we found earlier, but with 14.000 daily visits it was a tourist trap of dimensions!smiley_silent.gif

The trainride inside the caves was 20 km's + 1 km walk! Very beautiful, but lots of people and souvenir shops! (also inside the caves!)

We drove on to Croatia - Slovenia reminded a lot of Austria, but suddenly it got a lot more tropical. Palm trees and crystal clear blue water. The young and beautiful flashing their expensive clothes and cars along the coast - some contrast to the muddy caves smiley_smile.gif

We parked in Rijeka and headed for the beach. We expected to find bounty-beaches, but it was a lot more rocky.! Croatia has 5000 kms of coastline, but as the 4000 of them are on the small islands, the ones on the mainland are very well used. Actually we couldn't find a spot for our towels in the gravel and rocks as people laid there with only an inch apart! We settled on the concrete pavement instead and took a dip in the clear blue water.smiley_smile.gif

137427837870734600_resized.jpg?width=136

137427851226510100_resized.jpg?width=136

We found some off-road trails and headed for Bosnia Herzegovina. Again it seems simple on the photos, but the whole front end slipped at the rocks at one point and it felt like we were going to tip over! - It didn't smiley_smile.gifsmiley_smile.gif

Very steep inclines and rocks, aren't much used to this here in Denmark were our highest "mountain" tops at 170 meters...smiley_tongue.gif

137427867139793400_thumb.jpg

Returning through Bosnia, Croatia and Austria on a route more to the east, in the Alps we got tired of mountains. The OM603 needs some more power as it is painfully slow up the hills!

137427905432963500_resized.jpg?width=136

That forced us to find alternative routes over some of the mountains - much more fun crawling in low range through narrow paths and small rivers
smiley_sexy.gif

137427918516896600_resized.jpg?width=136

On the way home we visited "Hohenwerfen" - the great castle from the old Clint Eastwood movie "Where eagles dare"

137427888942905800_resized.jpg?width=680

The brakes got hot of all the braking downhill. The engine isn't braking the car very much, so had to use the brakes a lot - at one point they gave up and we had to make it stop by going over a large bump in a grasslawn in front of a house! The old couple living there was very friendly and we talked a little as the brakes cooled down. Somewhat scary to drive down a mountain and into a hairpin just to find out that the brakes don't work!

137427814981541000_resized.jpg?width=136

Sundawn in Slovenia.

137427893971676200_resized.jpg?width=702
Lisa tapping water from a spring in the Alps.

we had a great trip! Nearly 1000 pictures and 25 Gb of video (and possibly just as many was taking of the Tactical Zombie Response Unit by others!) Besides a stupid guy in Czech who tried to involve us in a fight we only met friendly people - from a French couple touring around Europe in a Toyota Liteace to a Land Rover pusher and curious customs officers - and even an Austrian couple in a TGB11 (unfortunately we sleeped) We have seen a lot of tourist attractions as well as paths less travelled and the Volvo did manage it all perfectly - impressive by a nearly 40 year old lady!

We travelled 3776 km's, used 476 liters of Diesel and 105 liters of water. Averaging 50 km/h and driving for 75 hours. Totally cost was DKK 9050,-

As allways the pictures (and more) can be found in full resolution on http://galleri.raredog.dk
